FOTA Update (Firmware Over-the-Air)

FOTA (Firmware Over-The-Air) is a method of remotely delivering firmware and operating system updates to devices without requiring physical access or user involvement. FOTA allows IT administrators to keep device operating systems and firmware current across an entire fleet from a central MDM console.

FOTA Benefits

FOTA eliminates the need for users to manually update their devices. Updates are pushed from the MDM console and applied automatically or with user notification. This ensures devices receive critical security patches quickly and consistently across the fleet.

Update Types

FOTA is used for firmware updates (core device software), operating system updates (Android version upgrades), security patches (monthly or as-needed security fixes), and configuration updates (device behavior changes). Each type of update has different importance and timing requirements.

Scheduled Updates

Organizations can schedule FOTA updates for specific times to avoid disrupting user workflows. Updates can be scheduled for overnight, weekends, or scheduled maintenance windows. Some critical security updates may require immediate deployment.

Device Compatibility

Not all devices support FOTA, particularly older devices or non-certified Android devices. Organizations should verify FOTA support when selecting devices. Most modern enterprise Android devices support FOTA.

Update Verification

After FOTA updates are deployed, the MDM platform verifies that devices have received and applied the updates correctly. Devices report their updated firmware and OS version back to the MDM, allowing administrators to confirm update success.

Staged Rollouts

For large deployments, organizations often use staged FOTA rollouts, applying updates to a small group of test devices first, then expanding to larger groups if no issues are reported. This reduces the risk of widespread issues from problematic updates.

Critical Security Updates

Security patches are often deployed via FOTA to quickly address newly discovered vulnerabilities. Organizations should establish policies ensuring critical security updates are deployed promptly to maintain device security.
